It is easier to play with a drum machine than a straight metronome. Rushing is a common practice of guitar students who do not practice with a drum machine or timing device.
When playing with a drum machine, the rhythms generally subdivide the measure making it easier to have vertical alignment. Guitar students like to play along with contemporary beats of a drum machine far more than playing along with a simple metronome. Even the simplest exercises seem much cooler with a powerful drum track. Guitar students are quick to “lock into the beat”, and “play in the pocket.”
The more time spent playing with a drum machine, the quicker guitar students are likely to notice the tempo is speeding up when not using a drum machine. Guitarists tend to rush when they are not locked into a solid rhythm. Playing along with a drum machine in the guitar classroom is a good idea with many benefits.
