Adding new students to the guitar class after several weeks of school starting is a bad idea for everyone involved, and yet it happens.
Have a plan in place how to deal with students who join the class after the class has learned all of the notes on the first three strings and are playing fairly well. What is going to be the plan for the new student?
My first solution to this was to make the new students “chord strummers.” That is, they were given the materials for note reading with the hopes they would catch up with the class, but for the time being, during class rime, they would strum chords while the other students played the melodies. That worked well.
Eventually, I wrote a text call “mixed” which allows me to teach the first string to late comers while I am teaching the fourth string to those who started at the beginning. Everything is the same except the newbies are playing an octave higher.
