Bill Swick Bio PicIt is important to learn every student’s name as quickly as possible. It is helpful to use assigned seating and have a seating chart.

At the beginning of the school year, new students test the waters knowing there is a period of anonymity. It is most important to learn students’ names as soon as possible. I set up every class so students sit in alphabetical order. I set up a seating chart and have a copy on the conductor’s stand, on my desk and in my grade book. I make a point to call students by their first names on a daily basis, particularly while tuning guitars. The sooner students are aware you know their name, the shorter the period of anonymity.
